The great onion-ring snatching fiasco

Posted in rants, yahoo, rant, people, rudeness, food, dirty, gluttony, gross, nasty, onion rings, stealing, theft, unsanitary, urls at 1:29 am by admin

Today, I bring you a tale of horror from URL’s, the Yahoo! cafeteria.

Since I am attempting to eat more healthy things throughout the day, I decided to treat myself to an overpriced $3.25 chopped chicken breast at the grill at URL’s.

Mind you, it wasn’t exactly lunchtime, as it was 2:25, and the cafeteria was on the verge of closing. Because of this, the chef working at the grill was taking every spare moment he possibly could to clean up his workspace and take things to the back when necessary.

There was only one other person in front of me in line — we’ll call him “Tom” — who was waiting for the chef to finish cooking a chicken breast for him as well. Tom was standing there waiting patiently for his chicken to finish cooking, and while he was waiting, the chef had to step away for a minute.

And that’s when it happened.

Just after the chef was out of sight, Tom shamelessly reached his grubby little hand right into the onion ring vat under the sneeze guard, and grabbed an onion ring and ate it! I was absolutely stunned, and Tom didn’t even notice that anyone had seen him, nor did he bother to look around to make certain that his crime had not been witnessed.

There are people like Tom all over the place. There’s the lady who grabs a handful of cashews and eats them from the giant self-serve container at the grocery store. There’s the guy who takes a piece of candy from the self-serve candy and eats it like it’s his for the taking. There’s the woman who picks things out of the salad bar and eats them while she’s making her salad, all the while knowing that the clerk can’t charge her for salad that’s already in her stomach.

I’m still shocked that he had the nerve to do this right in front of me, for two very succinct reasons:

  1. It’s nasty and unsanitary. Why should anyone else get onion rings that his fingers may have touched?
  2. It’s STEALING.

I was too aghast to say anything to “Tom” and so I just let him walk away with his chopped chicken breast, like nothing had happened. The only thing that gave me the tiniest bit of satisfaction was knowing that I’m not so enchanted by fried foods that I can’t resist grabbing them when they don’t belong to me, like a dog or cat jumping onto the table to snatch a bite from your dinnerplate when you step away for a moment.

I, sir, am not an animal.

Green tea Frappuccino tastes like summer — face down on the lawn!

Posted in rants, food, caffeine, reviews, starbucks at 9:34 pm by admin

Am I the only one who thinks that the new Starbucks Green Tea Frappuccino tastes like a grass-flavored smoothie? Honestly, I have never been much of a fan of the Starbucks non-coffee Frappuccinos because they don’t have much of a kick. It’s sort of like drinking O’Doul’s or smoking crack-free crack. Or snorting flour.

What’s next for Starbucks? Perhaps this winter they will introduce the Holiday Spice Firewood Latte!

If you haven’t been to Cold Stone Creamery, you’re just not very cool. Not only do they have amazing marble slab ice cream with mix-ins, but they have incredible cake too.

Today they are giving out free slices of ice cream cake between 5 and 8pm to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This Weekend: A BBQ outing, perhaps?

Posted in food at 12:38 am by admin

I’m contemplating a trip to the always-delicious Famous Dave’s in Mountainside, NJ this weekend. I will probably have the two-meat combo, the drunken apples, the potato salad, some spicy BBQ wings, some fries… and then collapse. They also have several different kinds of BBQ dipping sauces, plus tasty Georgia Mustard, which goes quite well with the fries.

Oh, and every server’s name is prefixed with “famous”! My favorite server if “Famous Boris”.

Ordering at Starbucks… simplified!

Posted in food at 7:39 pm by admin

When I order at Starbucks, there are a few drinks that are staples for me: the grande iced sugar-free hazelnut no-water americano, and the double tall sugar-free vanilla skim latte.

However, when I go to Starbucks with friends and colleagues, they always seem perplexed and amused by my drink order, as though I’ve just fallen on the floor and started ranting in tongues. There have been editorials complaining about how hard it is to order a Starbucks drink.

So, to avoid confusion, I’ve located some resources that will help the Starbucks-challenged folks get their bearings.

To start, here’s my understanding of how the ordering process at Starbucks should work, in terms of how to recite the drink (with options) that you would like to order. The order is:

1. Hot or cold (say “iced” if it’s iced, or nothing at all since hot is the default)
2. Number of shots (double, triple, quad)
3. Size (tall, grande, venti)
4. Type of syrup (for me, it’s the sugar-free hazelnut)
5. Type of milk (if applicable — soy, skim, etc.)
6. Any other options (no water for my americano, for instance)
7. The type of drink (latte, cappucino, americano, etc.)

Or, you could just order a frappucino. Then you don’t have to say anything special. But you’ll certainly look much less pretentious cool.

Kashi TLC - a cracker that’s gettin’ some love from me

Posted in food at 6:09 pm by admin

No, the two remaining members of the 90s R&B sensation TLC are not jumping on the sponsorship bandwagon by branding themselves as the official divas of whole-grain goodness.

In fact, Kashi TLC (which stands for “Tasty Little Crackers”) is the newest healthy snack that I’m absolutely in love with. Specifically, the Natural Ranch flavor.

Since I’ve been eating healthy (and have lost 17 lbs. since the beginning of December), I’m constantly on the lookout for snacks I can have during the day to keep the old metabolism kicking, and these are just about the best crackers I have ever eaten — and there are only 130 calories in FIFTEEN of them! Add some spreadable Laughing Cow cheese to these and I’m in heaven.

Boy, I’m awfully easy to please!
